Boy achieves family dream with geography bee win

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Passion for geography runs deep in Sathwik Karnik's family.

When he was about 6, his mother began challenging Sathwik and his older brother, Karthik, to her own version of hide-and-seek ? using an atlas. The boys would comb through the book, trying to be the first to find a city or landmark.

The games paid off when Karthik, now 15, made the finals of the National Geographic Bee in 2011 and 2012. But it was 12-year-old Sathwik, of Plainview, Mass., who finished the job, calmly answering questions about obscure island chains, bodies of water, global trade and culture to win the 25th annual geography bee Wednesday.

The clinching question? "Because Earth bulges at the equator, the point that is farthest from Earth's center is the summit of a peak in Ecuador. Name this peak." Sathwik nailed it: Chimborazo.

Runner-up Conrad Oberhaus, 13, of Lincolnshire, Ill., knew the answer as well, but Sathwik got all five questions right in their one-on-one duel. Earlier, Conrad couldn't name Baotou as the largest city in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which is home to one of the world's largest deposits of rare-earth elements. While Conrad didn't stumble again, Sathwik never relinquished the lead.

Sathwik and his brother said the victory was a team effort.

"It feels like I just finished something that he wanted to finish, so I sort of in a way completed his unfinished business," said Sathwik, who stands 4-foot-11 and has the fuzzy outline of a mustache on his upper lip.

Said Karthik: "I'm kind of elated now. What we started so many years ago has finally paid off."

Sathwik might have made it to the finals earlier if not for Karthik, who beat him twice in the Massachusetts state bee. But the younger brother triumphed at their school bee three years ago when he was in fourth grade and Karthik was in sixth, a moment Karthik described as "kind of a down point in my geography career."

Is Sathwik smarter?

"In some ways he is, in some ways he isn't," Karthik said. "The questions this year that they asked were of his liking, and that's the chief reason why he won."

The boys' mother, Rathma, and her husband, Vishwanath, who both work in the software industry, emigrated from near Mangalore, India, in 2002. Indian-American children have dominated both the National Geographic Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee in recent years. Vishwanath said the trend can be attributed to coming from a country of 1.2 billion people.

"That brought us the competitive spirit," he said. "If we don't work hard and put forth our best effort, we can't succeed in this world."

Ten participants made the finals, culled from a field of 54 state-level winners in Monday's preliminary round. Sathwik led throughout the final round and was the last contestant to get a question wrong.

Participants earned between 1 and 5 points for each correct answer, with the harder questions worth more points, and the competitors with the lowest scores were eliminated at various points in the competition.

Sathwik won a $25,000 scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. The finals will be televised Thursday night on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.

Sathwik, an aspiring doctor who also plays chess competitively, said he was nervous at first because he had never been on television before, but he became more comfortable as he rattled off a string of correct answers.

Conrad, the runner-up, won a $15,000 scholarship. Ricky Uppaluri of Roswell, Ga., at 11 the youngest of the finalists, was third and receives a $10,000 scholarship. Akhil Rekulapelli of Ashburn, Va., finished fourth and won $1,000 in cash.

Sathwik said he buckled down once he realized he had a chance to win, because he didn't want to return to the bee next year. Children can compete from fourth to eighth grade, but winners are ineligible to defend their title.

"I didn't want to go back because it's just a lot of preparation and a lot of nervousness," he said. "I wanted to finish it this time."

"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, who has moderated the bee finals since the inaugural competition in 1989, is stepping down after this year and will be replaced by broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien.

During a commercial break, Trebek warned the audience at Washington's National Theatre not to blurt out or silently mouth the answers.

"As if that's likely to happen," he said to laughter. "Most of you can't even find Detroit."

Engineers devise new way to produce clean hydrogen

May 21, 2013 ? Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications.

While hydrogen is ubiquitous in the environment, producing and collecting molecular hydrogen for transportation and industrial uses is expensive and complicated. Just as importantly, a byproduct of most current methods of producing hydrogen is carbon monoxide, which is toxic to humans and animals.

The Duke engineers, using a new catalytic approach, have shown in the laboratory that they can reduce carbon monoxide levels to nearly zero in the presence of hydrogen and the harmless byproducts of carbon dioxide and water. They also demonstrated that they could produce hydrogen by reforming fuel at much lower temperatures than conventional methods, which makes it a more practical option.

Catalysts are agents added to promote chemical reactions. In this case, the catalysts were nanoparticle combinations of gold and iron oxide (rust), but not in the traditional sense. Current methods depend on gold nanoparticles ability to drive the process as the sole catalyst, while the Duke researchers made both the iron oxide and the gold the focus of the catalytic process.

The study appears online in the May issue of the Journal of Catalysis.

"Our ultimate goal is to be able to produce hydrogen for use in fuel cells," said Titilayo "Titi" Shodiya, a graduate student working in the laboratory of senior researcher Nico Hotz, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering. "Everyone is interested in sustainable and non-polluting ways of producing useful energy without fossil fuels," said Shodiya, the paper's first author.

Fuel cells produce electricity through chemical reactions, most commonly involving hydrogen. Also, many industrial processes require hydrogen as a chemical reagent and vehicles are beginning to use hydrogen as a primary fuel source.

"We were able through our system to consistently produce hydrogen with less than 0.002 percent (20 parts per million) of carbon monoxide," Shodiya said.

The Duke researchers achieved these levels by switching the recipe for the nanoparticles used as catalysts for the reactions to oxidize carbon monoxide in hydrogen-rich gases. Traditional methods of cleaning hydrogen, which are not nearly as efficient as this new approach, also involve gold-iron oxide nanoparticles as the catalyst, the researchers said.

"It had been assumed that the iron oxide nanoparticles were only 'scaffolds' holding the gold nanoparticles together, and that the gold was responsible for the chemical reactions," Sodiya said. "However, we found that increasing the surface area of the iron oxide dramatically increased the catalytic activity of the gold."

One of the newest approaches to producing renewable energy is the use of biomass-derived alcohol-based sources, such as methanol. When methanol is treated with steam, or reformed, it creates a hydrogen-rich mixture that can be used in fuel cells.

"The main problem with this approach is that it also produces carbon monoxide, which is not only toxic to life, but also quickly damages the catalyst on fuel cell membranes that are crucial to the functioning of a fuel cell," Hotz said. "It doesn't take much carbon monoxide to ruin these membranes."

The researchers ran the reaction for more than 200 hours and found no reduction in the ability of the catalyst to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide in the hydrogen gas.

"The mechanism for this is not exactly understood yet. However, while current thinking is that the size of the gold particles is key, we believe the emphasis of further research should focus on iron oxide's role in the process," Shodiya said.

The Duke team's research was supported by the California Energy Commission and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Duke postdoctoral associates Oliver Schmidt and Wen Peng were also part of the research team.

After Months Of Speculation, Microsoft Officially Reveals Skype For The Xbox One

13Microsoft’s Don Mattrick pulled back the curtain on the Xbox One at a live event at the company’s Redmond campus, and it wasn’t long at all before the talk turned to software. One application in particular has been the subject of speculation for months, and SVP Yusuf Mehdi confirmed that Skype (which, if you recall, Microsoft acquired for $8.5 billion nearly two years ago) is part of the Xbox One experience. As you might imagine, the Xbox One Skype application allows users to participate in group video chats with their fellow users using the Kinect camera — so there are opportunities for a natural type of ongoing conversation, one that won’t require you to chat for 30 minutes and then disconnect. This could be an “always on” situation. You can answer a call by saying “Xbox, answer call” and then the video screen slides in from the right. Since the Xbox One aims to be your all-in-one “Home Entertainment System,” Skype is going to play a huge role in the overall experience. The demonstration showed a group Skype conversation happening while watching a video, with video quieting down a bit once the call is connected. Microsoft has always talked about being the hub of the living room, and it seems like the newly announced Xbox One is the device that brings its vision to reality. The game-changer with this Skype integration is that you can watch a television show or play a game while carrying on a conversation. This has been attempted, mostly as a “second screen experience,” but to make this a seamless reality is a huge step forward for Microsoft. Until now, you were constrained to the functionality of a particular game supporting voice chat, but this gives you a more personal experience no matter what you’re doing on your Xbox.

Video: Balloon crash in Turkey kills 1 injures 24

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Two hot air balloons collided mid-air during a sightseeing tour of volcanic rock formations in Turkey on Monday, causing one of them to crash to the ground, officials said. One Brazilian tourist was killed while 24 other people on board were injured.

The ascending balloon struck another balloon's wicker basket above it, causing a tear that sent it plunging to the ground, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The passengers on board the balloon that crashed were mostly tourists from Asia, Spain and Brazil, according to Abdurrahman Savas, the governor of Nevsehir province. Many had fractured bones and one of them, an elderly passenger, was in serious condition.

The balloons were flying above scenic canyons and volcanic cones of the Cappadocia region, a popular tourist destination some 300 kilometers (190 miles) from the capital, Ankara. Cappadocia is famed for its "fairy chimney" volcanic cones and its subterranean cities carved out of soft stone.

It was the second fatal accident in Cappadocia since balloon sightseeing tours were launched there more than a decade ago. In 2009, a British tourist died when two balloons also collided mid-air.

In February, a balloon caught fire and crashed in Egypt, killing 19 tourists.

Pope: church should open up a bit but still follow teaching

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis is calling for renewal in the Catholic church as he wrapped up two days of mass gatherings in St. Peter's Square aimed at energizing the faithful.

About 200,000 people turned out Sunday for Mass celebrated by Francis, about the same size crowd that came to a pep rally for Catholics that the pope led the night before in the square.

Francis urged his church to be more welcoming and avoid closing in on itself. But he warned that faithful should avoid "dangerous parallel paths" outside of doctrine.

In the pope's native South America, many Catholics have defected to dynamic evangelical Protestant churches.

For a second-straight day, Francis delighted the crowd by riding in his popemobile beyond the confines of Vatican City and down a Rome boulevard.

Health News - Study identifies new approach to improving treatment ...

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) ? Working with lab mice models of multiple sclerosis (MS), UC Davis scientists have detected a novel molecular target for the design of drugs that could be safer and more effective than current FDA-approved medications against MS.

The findings of the research study, published online today in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine could have therapeutic applications for MS as well as cerebral palsy and leukodystrophies, all disorders associated with loss of white matter, which is the brain tissue that carries information between nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

The target, a protein referred to as mitochondrial translocator protein (TSPO), had been previously identified but not linked to MS, an autoimmune disease that strips the protective fatty coating off nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord. The mitrochronical TSPO is located on the outer surface of mitochondria, cellular structures that supply energy to the cells. Damage to the fatty coating, or myelin, slows the transmission of the nerve signals that enable body movement as well as sensory and cognitive functioning.

The scientists identified mitochondrial TSPO as a potential therapeutic target when mice that had symptoms of MS improved after being treated with the anti-anxiety drug etifoxine, which interacts with mitochondrial TSPO. When etifoxine, a drug clinically available in Europe, was administered to the MS mice before they had clinical signs of disease, the severity of the disease was reduced when compared to the untreated lab animals. When treated at the peak of disease severity, the animals? MS symptoms improved.

?Etifoxine has a novel protective effect against the loss of the sheath that insulates the nerve fibers that transmit the signals from brain cells,? said Wenbin Deng, principal investigator of the study and associate professor of biochemistry and molecular medicine at UC Davis.

?Our discovery of etifoxine's effects on an MS animal model suggests that mitochondrial TSPO represents a potential therapeutic target for MS drug development,? said Deng.

?Drugs designed to more precisely bind to mitochondrial TSPO may help repair the myelin sheath of MS patients and thereby even help restore the transmission of signals in the central nervous system that enable normal motor, sensory and cognitive functions,? he said.

Deng added that better treatments for MS and other demyelinating diseases are needed, especially since current FDA-approved therapies do not repair the damage of immune attacks on the myelin sheath.?

The UC Davis research team hopes to further investigate the therapeutic applications of mitochondrial TSPO in drug development for MS and other autoimmune diseases. To identify more efficacious and safer drug candidates, they plan to pursue research grants that will enable them to test a variety of pharmacological compounds that bind to mitochondrial TSPO and other molecular targets in experimental models of MS and other myelin diseases.

The journal paper is entitled, ?A TSPO ligand is protective in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis.?

In addition to Wenbin Deng, co-authors of the paper are Daniel J. Daugherty, Vimal Selvaraj, Olga V. Chechneva, Xiao-Bo Liu and David E. Pleasure.

The study was in part supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Feldstein Medical Foundation and ShrinersHospitals for Children. NIH grant numbers R01 NS059043 and R01 ES015988.

URBANA - A National Science Foundation (NSF) planning grant will help establish the Center for Advanced Research in Drying (CARD), a joint program of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Mass.

"CARD will be devoted to research in drying moist, porous materials such as food and other agricultural products; forestry and paper products; chemical products; textiles; and biopharmaceuticals," said Hao Feng, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition and the Illinois site director.

According to Feng, the main focus of the research will be to develop products, processes, designs, and strategies to reduce energy usage and cost in these energy-intensive industries. Added benefits include improvements in product quality and enhancement of sustainable practices.

"In other words, CARD will help companies reduce their carbon footprint," he said.

The grant was funded under NSF's Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) program. I/UCRCs were developed to encourage collaboration between companies and universities in the development of novel processes and methods to solve grand challenges confronting our nation, said Irfan Ahmad, co-principal investigator of CARD and executive director of the U of I Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology.

"NSF provides seed funding to establish the center, and companies provide broader funding for industrially driven research projects. These projects are prioritized by an industry advisory board (IAB) comprising the member companies, and results are shared with all members," Ahmad added.

Jamal Yagoobi of WPI's Department of Mechanical Engineering will be the lead principal investigator/project director for CARD; Cosme Furlong-Vazquez will be the site co-director at WPI; and Hao Feng will be the site director at Illinois.

As the lead site for the program, WPI will host the initial meeting with both company and NSF representatives on Aug. 13-14. Will Facebook Buy Tumblr Instead Of Yahoo? - Business Insider

Yahoo's board is meeting Sunday evening to decide whether to buy Tumblr for $1.1 billion in cash, Kara Swisher and Peter Kafka reported last night.

So that means there are only a few hours left for Facebook to submit a compelling counter-offer.

Anecdotally, young people are deciding that Facebook is no longer cool and are decamping for Instagram and Tumblr.

Facebook already owns Instagram.

So now the question is whether it also wants to own Tumblr.

The man who broke the original Yahoo-might-buy-Tumblr story (along with Ms. Swisher), Peter Kafka, told us this morning that thinks the chatter that Facebook will swoop in with a massive wad of cash at the last moment is overblown.

Facebook has had plenty of opportunity to buy Tumblr, Mr. Kafka suggests.

If Facebook actually wanted Tumblr, in other words, Facebook would have already bought Tumblr.

So that leaves Yahoo.

According to Ms. Swisher and Mr. Kafka, the Yahoo-Tumblr deal is already fully baked, with Tumblr founder David Karp getting a four-year deal to stay on as Tumblr boss and grow the site independently from Yahoo. This may mean that Yahoo is not planning to aggressively "monetize" Tumblr after the deal, and that Yahoo will therefore not have to deal immediately with Tumblr's reported porn problem.

The $1.1 billion purchase price, meanwhile, will vaporize more than a third of Yahoo's cash balance, which will presumably leave some at the company wondering whether Yahoo should have spent so much money buying back its stock over the last couple of quarters.

In any event, we'll know in a few more hours whether Facebook really wants Tumblr or whether it's going, going, gone to Marissa Mayer and Yahoo...

How to make money online ? The Punch - Nigeria's Most Widely ...

May 18, 2013 by Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata Jnr. (CFA) (ask@cfagbata.com @cfagbata) 2 Comments Chekwuemeka Fred-Agbata

With the growing popularity of the Internet, one question that has been central to most of the messages I have received via Short Message Service and emails is: How to make money online? Truth is, making money online has become a hot topic globally. In line with this trend, therefore, the Ministry of Communications Technology has recently inaugurated the Naijacloud project with the primary objective of creating awareness about online work opportunities and creating job opportunities for millions of unemployed Nigerian youths.

This has simply given credence to the fact that even the Nigerian Government is eager to provide online jobs for its citizens. My experience in making money online dates back to 2006, and since then, I have learnt a lot and have been involved in various kinds of online business ventures. I will mention a few of them to serve as a guide where relevant.

I am 100 per cent certain that you can make money online. In fact, the number of Nigerians making money online is on the increase. However, you must realise that making money online is as difficult as making money in the real world. Part of the challenges is that we turn to the Internet with a pre-conceived notion that we will make it big in no time. This is more like the ?yahoo- yahoo? mindset.

Here are some of the online money-making opportunities available to you:

? Take your business online

When people ask me about making money online, I simply ask them if they already had a business. If the answer is yes, I advise them to go online. This is one of the fastest ways to make money online. Taking your business online is nothing other than developing a simple website with e-Commerce capabilities such that a potential client can visit and place orders for your products or services.

? Sell a product or offer a service

This is closely related to the first point discussed above. You can never make money online if you do not have a product or service that someone, somewhere is willing to pay for. So, create a new product and take it online. How about your services? That too can be unbundled and offered cheaply online. For instance,? it may be wise as a legal practitioner to break down the services you offer and place on your? website so as to attract Small and Medium Enterprises that usually regard legal services as something only big businesses can afford. One of the key secrets with making money online is to do everything within your power to price your product as competitive as possible with the aim of making it affordable and accessible to a larger percentage of clients.

? Start a blog

One of the goals of the ICT Clinic page is to help you start and run a successful blog using one of the world?s most popular blogging software ? WordPress. For me, the decision to start a professional blog some four years ago has helped tremendously. Besides the little money I make from advertisements on my blog, there is also the opportunity to make money as an affiliate of other products or services.? Most importantly, owning a blog has helped me win big offline consulting gigs and speaking opportunities that I might ordinarily not have been properly positioned for.

? Online freelancing

An increasing number of Nigerians (I know a few) have jumped on the online freelancing bandwagon and they are truly making ends meet.

Online freelancing is huge at the moment and countries like India is a testimony to that fact. It is possible to make money online by providing services online. A number of service-based professionals will readily find someone online willing to pay for their services once they are convinced of the value.

? Forex trading

A number of people have got their fingers burnt in forex trading, including yours truly, but this is not to say that it does not work. I think what has happened to the majority of people who must have had some sort of negative experiences is the fact that we allowed greed to take control. I have a highly contended friend who still makes money from forex, but a number of forex gurus will consider him a ?mugu? if they hear he is satisfied with the little he makes.

Disclaimer: I am not in any way stating that any of these are sure-proof, but they might be worth looking into as a means of making profit from your Internet presence. The most important piece of advice is for you to get involved in something you love and have fun doing it.

Serena Williams reaches Italian Open final

ROME (AP) ? A week out from the French Open, Serena Williams is one victory away from winning her fourth straight tournament.

The top-ranked American overcame an early break of her serve to ease past Romanian qualifier Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 Saturday and reach the Italian Open final, extending her career-best winning run to 23 matches.

Williams is coming off consecutive titles in Miami, Charleston and Madrid.

In Sunday's final, Williams will face third-seeded Victoria Azarenka, who kept her concentration through two rain delays to beat seventh-seeded Sara Errani 6-0, 7-5.

In the men's tournament, six-time champion Rafael Nadal reached the final by defeating sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4, a day after Berdych rallied to beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

After being pushed to three sets in his previous two matches ? against Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis and fourth-seeded David Ferrer ? Nadal appeared back in his comfort zone against Berdych.

Nadal's final opponent will be either Roger Federer or 36th-ranked Benoit Paire of France, who were playing a night match at the Foro Italico.

Williams' only title at this clay-court event came in 2002, when she beat Justine Henin in the final. That was also the year she won her only French Open title. Last year in Paris, Williams lost in the opening round of a major tournament for the first time, falling to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.

Roland Garros starts next Sunday.

"I love the clay. I haven't had many wins at Roland Garros but I do love it. I love to slide," Williams said. "My goal is just to win a match there this year."

Williams has twice won 21 in a row before, although both of those runs came a decade ago, in 2002 and 2003.

Martina Navratilova established the longest women's win run in the Open Era at 74 matches in 1984.

At 31, Williams is back at the top of her game after missing 11 months in 2010 and 2011 with a right foot injury and a pulmonary embolism.

The 64th-ranked Halep entered with an impressive run herself, having beaten former top-10 player Daniela Hantuchova to qualify then 2009 French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round. That was followed in succession with wins over fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanksa, 13th-seeded Roberta Vinci and two-time Rome winner Jelena Jankovic.

Solid off both sides and an agile mover, the 2008 French Open girls champion took a set off Williams in their only previous meeting in the second round of Wimbledon two years ago. Halep tested Williams again at the start of this match, angling baseline shots to the corners to force the 15-time Grand Slam winner into errors.

Halep broke to take a 2-1 lead in the first set, but Williams broke right back and cruised from there as she gained the measure of her opponent and began to win the longer rallies.

Williams went directly to the practice court after winning.

"I was unhappy with some things today," she said. "I want to do well here as well as (in Paris)."

Azarenka is in a final for the first time since beating Williams for the title in February at Doha, Qatar. That followed her Australian Open victory. Since then, Azarenka has been slowed by right ankle and left foot injuries.

Errani reached last year's French Open final and was the first Italian semifinalist in this tournament since Raffaella Reggi won the 1985 event in Taranto.

Azarenka did well to take the Foro Italico crowd out of the match early on and never trailed in the second set.

We?re supposed to see Moore?s Linda as a hothouse flower disguised as a wallflower. When an former student, Jason (Michael Angaro), now a struggling New York playwright, returns home, she finds herself as wrapped up in him as in his new play. (Greg Kinnear does a nice supporting job as Jason?s dad.)

She and the school drama coach (a funny-campy Nathan Lane) convince the school?s principal (Jessica Hecht) to stage the play despite its outr? trappings. Would that ?The English Teacher? were a bit more outr? itself. Grade: B (Rated R for language and some sexual content.)

Amy's Baking Company Hires PR Firm Of Joe Arpaio | The Braiser

After finding themselves the butt of online jokes following their appearance on Kitchen Nightmares, and after posting a massive, all-caps meltdown against the ?Reddits? on Facebook, Amy and Samy Bouzgalo have hired Rose, Moser & Allyn, a Scottsdale, AZ public relations firm, to restore what morsels of a good name they have left at Amy?s Baking Company. The Internet should brace itself, because those wacky Bouzgalos might remain in business for a damn long while thanks to the work of these guys.

How good is Rose, Moser & Allyn? They represent the highly controversial Maricopa County Sherrif Joe Arpaio, the law enforcement official?so divisive that someone recently tried to blow him up with a package bomb. Time Magazine?describes him thusly:

The 80-year-old lawman, who?describes?himself?as ?America?s toughest sheriff,? has served for the past two decades and is best known for the tough talk that made him a centerpiece of the undocumented immigration debate. He has logged more than 35,000 arrests of people who were?accused?of?being in the country illegally. So staunch was his position that the Department of Justice investigated him for racial profiling in 2010.? He?s?also?built?open-air?tent?cities?to house prisoners at a cheaper cost to?the?county?and?ordered that inmates? uniforms be changed to?pink?because he felt that the color would be psychologically calming to them.

Frankly ? and we say this with the utmost sincerity ? it might be easier to represent a hardline, anti-immigration extremist than a couple who claims that their children inhabit cat bodies. Nevertheless, given the brief bio above, Arpaio and the Bouzgalos don?t seem that many degrees apart: at some point, the Bouzgalos would have totally started keeping their ejected customers in tent cities.

As their first PR move, Rose, Moser & Allyn got the Bouzgalos to stage a grand re-opening for next Tuesday, with a press conference and a limited seating dinner, where customers can ?judge for themselves the character of owners Amy and Samy? who have devoted their lives to, and earn their living from, their small restaurant.? (That?s from the press release written by the PR firm. Isn?t it a good one? It?s so heartstring-tuggy, and such.)

Google Glass to get CNN, Elle, Twitter, Tumblr, Evernote and Facebook apps soon

Google Glass to get CNN, Elle, Twitter, Tumblr, Evernote and Facebook apps soon

The I/O news faucet hasn't quite dried up yet. During the San Francisco conference today, Google chatted up some new Glass apps. The new applications will come packaged as "Glassware," delivering CNN breaking news alerts, Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook posts, Evernote reminders and articles from Elle Magazine. The New York Times and Path were the only two apps previously available to Explorers, making this new suite of products a very welcome addition indeed. More apps are no doubt on the way -- hundreds of developers are working to produce their own software for the Google-branded headgear, which is set to launch for consumers sometime next year.

LulzSec hackers sentenced for attacking Sony, News Corp and the CIA

LulzSec hackers sentenced

A U.K. judge has sentenced four members of hacking collective LulzSec, an offshoot of hacking group Anonymous, for their role in taking down various corporate and government websites between February and September 2011, ZDNet reported. Judge Deborah Taylor sentenced 26-year old Ryan Ackroyd, 20-year old Jake Davis, 18-year old Mustafa al-Bassam and 21-year old Ryan Cleary in a London courtroom on Thursday.

[More from BGR: Not just another pretty face: Apple?s iPhone 5S to see big internal overhaul]

Ackroyd received a prison sentence of up to 32 months, of which he will be required to serve at least half, while Davis was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution, which he must remain at for at least a year. Bassam, who was a minor at the time of the hackings, received a suspended sentence of 20 months, and Cleary was sentenced to 32-months, of which he will be required to serve at least 16 months.

?You sought to amuse yourselves and wreaked destruction and havoc,? Judge Taylor said. ?You cared nothing about the privacy of others, but kept your own identities hidden.?

All four pleaded guilty to taking part in denial-of-service attacks against Sony, News Corp., Nintendo, the CIA and other sites, however they denied posting personal information. Cleary received the harshest sentence for additional charges related to hacking computers belong to the Air Force, and is still awaiting sentencing for ?possessing child pornography.

CFTC adopts weakened rule on derivatives trading

(AP) ? A rule intended to loosen the largest U.S. banks' control over the trading of complex investments and help safeguard the financial system was weakened Thursday by regulators.

Critics say the changes will allow major Wall Street banks to continue to dominate the $700 trillion derivatives market.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved the rule on a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Jill Sommers cast the lone dissenting vote.

Under the rule, investment firms would be required to request price quotes for a derivatives contract from a minimum of two banks this year and three beginning in 2014. An earlier proposal had called for price quotes from at least five banks.

Derivatives are investments whose value is based on some other investment, such as oil and currencies. The market was largely unregulated before the 2008 financial crisis. The rule was mandated by Congress under the 2010 financial regulatory overhaul.

By requiring fewer price quotes, critics worry that the market will be less competitive. Five of the largest U.S. banks ? JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley ? account for more than 90 percent of total derivatives contracts.

Dennis Kelleher, the president of Better Markets, a group that advocates stricter financial regulation, said banks opposed the requirement for more price quotes "to prevent a level playing field, competition and transparency."

Requiring a larger number of quotes gives banks and financial firms that aren't in the dominant group the opportunity to enter the market and makes it more competitive. That could potentially lower prices for all users of derivatives, such as farmers, airlines or oil companies.

Under the rule, banks and other financial institutions would be required to trade derivatives contracts on new electronic exchanges.

CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler says that will create more transparency because everyone who wants to compete in the marketplace will be able to see prices before deciding to invest. Prior to the rule, they could not.

"This is a significant shift toward market transparency from the status quo," Gensler said.

Commissioner Bart Chilton said the commission could have achieved greater transparency by approving the original proposal. But he said a compromise was better than no action.

"By failing to act, we leave in place unregulated dark markets. These are the very dark markets that got us into the economic mess in 2008," Chilton said.

Wall Street banks had opposed requiring a minimum number of bids for derivatives contracts.

An official for the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, Wall Street's largest lobbying organization, says the rule could ultimately hurt the everyday investor that it seeks to protect.

Kenneth E. Bentsen, Jr., acting president and CEO for SIFMA, contends that more bids could chase financial firms out of the trading exchanges. That's because some might fear confidential price information could be widely broadcast. Fewer firms could lead to less liquidity in the market. That would slow trading.

Under the rule, however, the bids would not be made public.

The lower requirement illustrates how banks have managed to tweak rules written by Congress three years ago that are still being finalized by regulators.

The banks have also succeeded in weakening a rule that would ban banks from trading for their own profit. The latest version of the so-called Volcker Rule includes an exemption for banks to make such trades when they are used to offset others risks taken.

The rule was named after former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker. Its adoption has been delayed largely because of the banks' objections.

Google's conversational voice search reaches the desktop through Chrome

Google conversational search

We're used to Google's mobile search apps letting us ask questions as we would with real people, but the desktop has usually been quite stiff. That's changing today: Google is bringing conversation-like voice search to our computers through Chrome, with no typing required. Web denizens just have to say "okay, Google," ask their question, and get back a spoken response similar to what they'd hear on their phones. The company hasn't said just how soon Chrome will incorporate the new voice features, however.

(AP Photo/Anja Niedringhaus)

(AP) ? Sitting on a dirty straw mat on the parched ground of southern Afghanistan, Masooma sank deeper inside a giant black shawl. Hidden from view, her words burst forth as she told her side of what happened to her family sometime before dawn on March 11, 2012.

According to Masooma, an American soldier wearing a helmet equipped with a flashlight burst into her two-room mud home while everyone slept. He killed her husband, Dawood, punched her 7-year-old son and shoved a pistol into the mouth of his baby brother.

"We were asleep. He came in and he was shouting, saying something about Taliban, Taliban, and then he pulled my husband up. I screamed and screamed and said, 'We are not Taliban, we are not government. We are no one. Please don't hurt us,'" she said.

The soldier wasn't listening. He pointed his pistol at Masooma to quiet her and pushed her husband into the living room.

"My husband just looked back at me and said, 'I will be back.'" Seconds later she heard gunshots, she recalled, her voice cracking as she was momentarily unable to speak. Her husband was dead.

Masooma, who like many Afghans uses only one name, defied tribal traditions that prohibit women from speaking to strangers to talk to The Associated Press while ? half a world away ? the military prepares to court-martial a U.S. serviceman in the killing of her husband and 15 other Afghan civilians, mainly women and children.

The AP also interviewed other villagers about the case, all of whom are identified by the U.S. Army as witnesses or relatives of witnesses. They included a sister and brother who were wounded and two men who were away during the killings and returned to find wives and children slain. The sister and brother told AP how they tried to run away and hide from a soldier with a gun, only to be shot ? and see their neighbors and grandmother killed.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales of Lake Tapps, Washington, is accused of the killings. Prosecutors say Bales slipped away from his remote outpost to attack two nearby villages, returning in the middle of the rampage and then for a final time soaked in blood. During a hearing last fall, other soldiers testified that Bales spent the evening before the massacre watching a movie about revenge killings, sharing contraband whiskey from a plastic bottle and discussing an attack that cost one of their comrades his leg.

Bales has not entered a plea, but his lawyers have not disputed his involvement in the killings. They have said his mental health may be part of his defense; he was on his fourth combat deployment and had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as well as a concussive head injury while serving in Iraq. The Army is seeking the death penalty.

The killings took place in Kandahar's Panjwai district, deep in the ethnic Pashtun heartland that spawned the Taliban movement, an area where women are hidden inside all-enveloping burqas and rarely leave their homes.

Masooma's account of the night has been reported variously over the past year, differing over details such as whether there was one or more than one U.S. soldier involved. However, the four hours she recently spent with the AP was her first face-to-face interview with a news organization. She spoke as her burly brother-in-law Baraan loomed nearby.

The interview took place outside Baraan's single-story mud home in Kandahar city, because Alokzai and Najiban villages, where the killings occurred, are too hostile for foreigners to visit. Even in Kandahar, some 150 kilometers (90 miles) away, the AP journalists sought to avoid being seen by Baraan's neighbors, who he feared would react negatively to their presence.

Masooma said that the soldier returned to the family's bedroom after killing her husband. She stood in terror. Her children hid under their blankets. The soldier moved slowly and seemed angry. Gesturing to show how he hit her in the arms and shoved her to the ground, Masooma said he then moved toward her son Hikmatullah, then 7.

Her son said he remembers the sight of the attacker in full military uniform. "I was so afraid. I pretended I was asleep," he said.

Masooma said the soldier found Hikmatullah and punched him repeatedly in the head.

She said the soldier then found her 2-year-old daughter, Shahara. He grabbed her pigtails and violently shook her head back and forth.

He then went to the crying baby Hazratullah and shoved the muzzle of his black pistol into the infant's mouth, she said.

"He just held it there in his mouth. I screamed and screamed, 'He is just a baby. Don't kill him. Don't kill him.' But he just kept the gun in his mouth. He didn't say anything. He just stared at him," she recalled. As she recounted the attack, Hazratullah fussed and squirmed beneath the giant shawl that enveloped her.

After some time, she said, the soldier took the gun from the baby's mouth and walked back into the living room. Masooma dug her bare foot into the dirt to demonstrate how the soldier slipped his foot beneath her husband's head to lift it from the floor, as if to be sure he was really dead. The soldier looked down at her husband, shrugged his shoulders and returned to searching her home. After he finished rifling through their belongings, he left.

Investigators say Bales was armed with a 9 mm pistol and an M-4 rifle outfitted with a grenade launcher when he walked off his base and went on a nighttime killing spree in five homes, including Masooma's. He faces 16 counts of premeditated murder; six counts of attempted murder; seven counts of assault; and one count each of possessing steroids, using steroids, destroying a laptop, burning bodies, and using alcohol. He is being held in a military prison at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle in Washington state.

On April 23, Bales appeared in a military courtroom at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for a hearing that focused on what might happen if he is convicted, including which relatives and friends could speak on his behalf during a sentencing hearing. Such testimony could help determine whether he receives the death penalty.

The U.S. government flew Baraan and five other Afghan men ? all members of families who were attacked ? to Seattle to familiarize them with the U.S. judicial system and notify them that they would likely have to return when the court-martial begins in September. Only three of those who went to the U.S. in March said they saw the attack. Some, like Baraan, went on behalf of relatives who were slain or women prevented from traveling.

None of the Afghan witnesses was able to identify Bales as the attacker, but other evidence, including tests of the blood on his clothes, implicated him, according to testimony from a DNA expert.

The AP also spoke with several others who survived the attack or lost family members. To avoid putting the Afghans in danger should they be seen talking to foreigners, the AP arranged for those interviews to take place at a nondescript hotel in Kandahar. The Afghans drove the dusty, dangerous road from their villages to the hotel and then returned home.

Said Jan, an elderly man who was visiting Kandahar during the attack and lost his wife and three other family members, said he went to the United States expecting justice.

"I thought we were going to America to see him hanged," Said Jan said. "Instead they showed us a courtroom and kept us in rooms asking us more and more questions."

Said Jan said he wasn't interested in returning for the trial.

"None of us will go," agreed Mohammed Wazir, who also went to the U.S. in March. "Why would we care about seeing America? We will only go if he is hanged."

Wazir said he returned home from a trip the morning after the attack to find 11 members of his family dead ? his wife, his mother, two brothers, a 13-year-old nephew and his six children. Their bodies were partially burned.

He was left only with his 3-year-old son, Habib Shah, who had accompanied him on the trip to Spin Boldak, a town on the Pakistani border.

While Wazir spoke of the horror of finding his home spattered with blood, still smelling of burned flesh, Habib, now 4, played by his side, chewing on his toy police car, occasionally running it across his father's legs, loading small candies on the roof and giggling when they tumbled off.

"He misses his mother all the time," Wazir said, trying to straighten Habib's curly brown hair.

From another home that was attacked that night, 16-year-old Rafiullah remembers the American soldier smashing through the door waving his pistol. Awakened in a small room with his grandmother and his sister Zardana, he said he didn't know what to do. "We just ran and he ran after us."

Zardana, 11, said a cousin dashed over to help. He was shot and killed, she said. "We couldn't stop. We just wanted somewhere to hide. I was holding on to my grandmother and we ran to our neighbors." Their neighbor, Naim, came out of his house to see what the noise was all about and was shot and wounded. His daughter then ran to him but was killed by the American soldier, Zardana said, struggling to remember and fiddling with her green scarf decorated with tiny sequins.

Zardana, who said she saw soldiers in a nearby field as she ran from one house to the next, remembers trying to hide behind her grandmother at the neighbor's house. But the soldier found them.

Gesturing with his hand as if spraying the room with gunfire, Rafiullah said the soldier "just went bang, bang, bang."

Rafiullah was wounded in both his legs, his grandmother was killed and Zardana was shot in the head.

She removed her scarf to show where the wound had healed; the effects will last a lifetime. She suffered nerve damage on her left side and has to walk with a cane. Her hand is too weak to hold anything heavy.

Zardana spent about two months recovering at the Kandahar Air Base hospital and three more at a naval hospital in San Diego receiving rehabilitation therapy, accompanied by her father, Samiullah.

Listening as she spoke, Samiullah smiled at his lanky daughter, encouraging her to say the only English phrase she knows: "Thank you."

Zardana spoke of her treatment in San Diego and the doctors and nurses who helped her learn to walk again, gave her toys and still find ways to stay in touch.

"They showed me so much love," she said with a tiny smile. "They asked me about what happened and when I told them how my grandmother died and how afraid I was and how I was shot, they cried and cried."

The accounts of many villagers have varied over the past year, making it a challenge for investigators and journalists to find out a full narrative of the attack.

For example, Masooma gave an telephone interview to a reporter days after the attack, with Baraan, her brother-in-law, acting as a translator. According to the resulting story, she described a single attacker in her home, but said she saw many soldiers outside.

Three months later, her family allowed a female Army investigator to question her. The investigator testified at a hearing last fall that Masooma clearly stated two soldiers carried out the attack. The investigator said she had no reason to doubt Masooma's credibility.

At the same hearing, Baraan testified, insisting Masooma was mistaken when she said there were two soldiers. Lawyers for the soldier accused in the killings suggested Baraan might be influencing Masooma ? especially since the defense was not allowed to speak with her.

No physical evidence has emerged to suggest more than one soldier took part in the killings. Surveillance footage from the base showed one soldier returning to the camp; the soldiers who greeted him said he was covered in blood.

Nevertheless, many Afghans villagers, including some eyewitnesses, continue to insist multiple soldiers were present during the attack.

In the interview with the AP, Masooma did not waver in her insistence that one soldier attacked her home, and Baraan denied that she ever reported seeing many soldiers outside. Masooma did recall flares lighting the sky until "night seemed like day" ? which is consistent with testimony from the hearing, as guards said they fired a flare that illuminated the sky for 20 seconds after hearing gunshots. Masooma also said she heard helicopters overhead; there was no corroborating testimony at the hearing.

Masooma is absolutely certain of one thing: what it will take for her to find closure.

"I just want to see him killed," she said of Bales. "I want to see him dead. Then I can let go."
