And here?s some PR:

INTERPRET DURBAN is a multi-faceted creative contest running throughout the month of September. Artists are called to get involved in the various categories and the competition culminates in the main INTERPRET DURBAN event, which features exhibitions of the selected submissions, an awards ceremony and the MUSO MIX COMP, which stages original collaborations between local bands. Interpret Durban 2012 is organised by Street Scene and Intertwine and is part of the eThekwini Municipality?s CELEBRATE DURBAN campaign.

2010 marked the first INTERPRET DURBAN, an event inspired by our city and its people. 3 years later, the event has grown from being an independent creation to becoming a public celebration supported by civic and private groups. Regardless of this success, the aim of INTERPRET remains true to its original intentions: to showcase the city of DURBAN and its people.

Each INTERPRET DURBAN event takes a concentrated approach to shining a spotlight on DURBAN and her citizens. The unique venues, artists, live music, d?cor and every other aspect of the night carefully bring together and show off the best this city has to offer.

From Colombo, the metropolis?s oldest coffee roastery, to the grandeur of our 102 year old City Hall and now moving on to the BAT CENTRE, the harbour-side cultural epicentre of the city, each venue has been selected to serve as a symbol and reminder of DURBAN. This message is fuelled by the music and creative works on display on the night.

THE CREATIVE CONTEST

2012?s overall theme, ?ENTER DURBAN?, asks creatives to consider the city from a tourist?s perspective ? as someone approaching Durban with fresh eyes. In addition to the T-SHIRT DESIGN (invite-only), PHOTOGRAPHY and VIDEO categories, this year?s contest has revealed an additional MIXED MEDIUM ART category for competition, allowing more traditional art mediums to participate, and thus creating the potential for a greater range of artists to enter and interpret the theme. Submissions for this competition close on the 25th of September so if you haven?t entered yet it?s not too late to try stake your claim on some of the R160 000 worth of phenomenal prizes on offer. To download the entry forms and read up on the criteria for the event visit www.interpretdurban.com .

The t-shirt design component takes centre stage within the creative contest. The winning designs, selected from the cream of Durban?s design talent, will be printed on O?Neill shirts and sold ? with portions of the proceeds going to UMTHOMBO, a charity organisation whose work with street children in the city has caught international acclaim.

THE MAIN EVENT

The INTERPRET DURBAN 2012 main event takes place on September 29th at the Bat Centre. The purpose of the event is to recognise and award the best creative contest submissions as selected by a host of industry specific judges, and to celebrate Durban?s creativity and potential. The night is packed to the hilt with entertainment: exhibitions, live graffiti art, music, fashion and interactive elements for guests to spectate or get
involved in.

On top of this offering of entertainment, Interpret Durban are proud to bring you one of the most influential Durban hip hop outfits ever to have graced the 031. BIG IDEA will be reforming specially for the event and performing for one night only, bringing you their unique flavour of passionately Durban lyrical mastery wrapped in a live band made up of the city?s premiere names in the music industry. Following on from their unique party starting antics will be Durban DJ extraordinaire DJ Chynaman, this combo of proudly DURBAN musical performances will ensure everyone?s takkies get squeaking across the dance floor.

As if this is not enough to keep you entertained INTERPRET DURBAN will be staging the first ever MUSO MIX COMP. Three of Durban?s freshest bands have been invited to write and perform a song with a specifically chosen guest artist, in an effort to promote a diverse collaborative and skills sharing programme amongst Durban musicians.

They are (in no specific order):
? Fruits & Veggies feat Abdus
? Coals of Juniper feat Portia (Nje)
? Luminati feat Wesley (E.X.P.L.O.S.I.O.N)

The night will be hosted by self proclaimed Hollywood superstar Benson Schwenson apprearing as ?Le Chop Royale.?
