Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Last year's floods in Thailand caused hard drive shortages after wreaking havoc on a number of electronics manufacturers, but new stats from IHS iSuppli indicate that the HDD market for PCs has fully recovered and is poised to hit an all time high. The firm expects 524 million units for internal use in PCs to ship this year, besting the previous record by 4.3 percent. What's giving the recovery an added boost? According to the analytics group, the extra demand comes courtesy of Windows 8 and Ultrabooks. Unfortunately for deal hounds, the company noted in a report earlier this year that prices aren't expected to dip below the pre-flood range until 2014. If IHS iSuppli projections hold true, total annual hard drive shipments could reach 575.1 million by 2016.

BP to Sell Malaysian PTA Interests to India?s Reliance

BP today announced that it has agreed to sell all its interests in purified terephthalic acid (PTA) production in Malaysia to Reliance Global Holdings Pte. Ltd. (Reliance). The agreement concerns BP?s 100 per cent equity in BP Chemicals (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (BPCM), located at Kuantan on the east coast of Malaysia.

Reliance has agreed to purchase BP?s interest in BPCM for $230 million in cash and both parties anticipate completing the transaction in 2012.

James Yim, head of BP's aromatics business in Asia, said: ?This is an efficient plant with a good market position in the region. RECRON Malaysia, part of the Reliance Group, is already our largest customer in Malaysia and Reliance Industries is a significant feedstock supplier at Kuantan, so Reliance is a natural owner of this plant.?

Nick Elmslie, chief executive of BP Petrochemicals said: ?BP has a major, global PTA business, with around one fifth of global PTA production capacity and a track record of leading technology. We will continue to concentrate our PTA strategy on deploying new technologies into high growth markets like China where we are in the middle of a considerable expansion programme, and in OECD markets where our technology gives us an advantage and high utilization rates.

?We are also building new revenue streams by licensing our PTA and paraxylene technologies.?

All current staff of BPCM are expected to transfer to the new owners under equivalent terms and conditions. BP?s acetic acid manufacturing and marketing business in Malaysia is unaffected by this sale.

Notes:

The $230 million in cash includes the net value of working capital and cash, estimated at a Malaysian Ringgit to US Dollars exchange rate of 3.1. The final value will be determined by prevailing Ringgit exchange rate before completion of the sale.

Including this agreement, BP has agreed divestments of assets with a total value of around $33 billion since the start of 2010. BP currently expects to increase this total to $38 billion by the end of 2013.

BPCM?s PTA plant, commissioned in 1996, has nameplate production capacity of 610,000 tonnes per year (tpa).*

BP?s current net global PTA capacity is 7.5 million tonnes per year (mtpa) from eight sites in the US (2), Belgium, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan (2). The largest is at Zhuhai, China where expansion of its current capacity of 1.5mtpa is expected to add a further 1.25mtpa by 2014, making it one of the world?s largest PTA manufacturing sites.*

BP has been present in Malaysia since the 1960s and has over 850 staff in the country, including BPCM.

BP has a 70 per cent interest in a 560,000tpa acetic acid plant in Kertih*; a lubricants plant at Port Klang; and markets lubricants in Malaysia under both the Castrol and BP brands.

BP is currently in the process of growing its Asian Business Service Centre in Kuala Lumpur, which supports business and functional operations both regionally and globally.

Improve Website Design With An Impressive Layout - Web Unlimited

Houston Web DesignThe purpose of any website is to communicate with viewers through articles, video streaming, images, and an impressive layout. All of this is done to achieve a strategic advantage and favorable outcome over any internet competition. A good Houston web design company can create a design so that a company can be successful in competing against online rivals. A successful website must possess certain basic elements, all of which have the capacity to entice spiders for proper indexing to help attract relevant traffic and eventually converting it into a sale. Following are some tips to help create an impressive layout that is appealing to potential customers.

  • Menu Placement ? The placement of a menu should be done strategically for excellent presentation, typically at the top of every web page so visitors can immediately see all essential elements. Viewers tend to access a site?s information from the navigation menu positioned on the home page, with sub-level menus in a sliding panel that can be accessed by hovering the mouse. The menu should link to other pages and provide relevant information.

  • Simplicity ? A common mistake in web design is being excessive with the layout. It is very tempting to want to include too much; however, the elements of any design should be kept simple. Too much information can confuse a visitor, and slow a page down, making it difficult to navigate and decreasing loading speed. Make the layout a professional Houston web design, with just the right amount of seasoning for the best result.

  • Typography ? The proper typography is one of the foundations of a great layout and plays a vital role in its success. Therefore, it is imperative to choose the right typeface that is readable in order to express the content of the page. Avoid using a font size below 12 points and use different fonts sparingly to create hierarchy and tone without exaggeration.

  • Organization ? Proper arrangement of information is one of the most vital decisions that can be made in the design of a website; how it is presented can have a substantial effect on a visitor?s experience with the website. Most viewers really have little knowledge about a website on a first visit, so all information must be systematically arranged so that its purpose can be quickly perceived.

An impressive layout is something that can linger in the minds of potential customers long after leaving a website. A Houston web design should have a layout with essential elements that will win the hearts of viewers making important buying decisions. Failure to portray the true meaning of a business through its online presence can be a fruitless effort. If the layout tips referenced above are followed, a website can become a remarkable one appealing to visitors and web spiders alike!

BREAST Breast Cancer Drug Linked to Sexual Problems in Older Women

FRIDAY, Sept. 28 (HealthDay News) ? Postmenopausal women treated for breast cancer with drugs known as aromatase inhibitors have high rates of sexual problems, which is an important and underestimated issue, according to a new study from Sweden.

Nearly three-quarters of these women reported insufficient lubrication, 56 percent had pain during intercourse, half said their sexual interest was low, and 42 percent were dissatisfied with their sex life.

These percentages are much higher than for postmenopausal women who weren?t treated for beast cancer, according to researchers Dr. Juliane Baumgart and colleagues at Orebro University and Uppsala University.

The study was published online this month in Menopause and appears in the February 2013 print issue of the journal.

Women taking tamoxifen for breast cancer treatment also had low sexual interest and more pain with intercourse, but had far fewer problems than women taking aromatase inhibitors, the study found.

Aromatase inhibitors block formation of estrogen from other hormones in the body. This may help prevent breast cancer recurrence and improve survival, the researchers explained in a journal news release.

However, there is a lack of effective treatment for the sexual side effects of aromatase inhibitors. Further research is needed to learn more about the causes and impact of these side effects in order to improve breast cancer survivors? quality of life, the researchers concluded.

While the study found an association between this class of drugs and sexual problems, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

More information

The American Cancer Society has more about aromatase inhibitors.

China party ready to make decisions on new leaders

BEIJING (AP) ? China's tumultuous, bizarre year in politics appears headed for a home stretch, with leading members of the ruling Communist Party convening to finalize a list of new leaders and decide the fate of a disgraced colleague.

A highly anticipated meeting of the decision-making Politburo is expected to take place as early as Friday, party-connected academics and analysts said. Afterward, state media are expected to announce dates for a party congress, a pivotal event to install the new leadership.

Dates for the congress, which is held once every five years in mid-October, are overdue. Dates for the past three congresses were all announced in late August.

The delay is yet another sign of disarray over a power transition that has become fractious despite party leaders' attempts to display public unity.

"Is it unprecedented? No. Is it unusual? Yes," former U.S. deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage said of the delay.

"It just introduces questions among people who are watching China and wondering what's going on," Armitage said at an academic forum this week in Washington.

Disgraced Politburo member Bo Xilai has been the focal point of much of the tumult, which has featured a murder, corruption, two high-profile trials and a deadly car crash, all of which exposed bare-knuckled infighting among a leadership that prefers secrecy.

The turmoil was set off when a trusted Bo aide disclosed that his boss's wife had murdered a British businessman. Bo was sacked as party chief of the city of Chongqing; his wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence after confessing to the murder; and the aide, Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun, received a 15-year prison term for initially covering up the murder and other misdeeds.

The trials of Wang, which wrapped up this week, and Gu, which finished earlier, cleared the way for the party to decide whether to charge Bo with criminal wrongdoing. But his ouster from the leadership early this year opened a window into the divisive jostling for power as president and party leader Hu Jintao prepares to retire to make way for younger leaders.

One of Hu's top lieutenants was shunted aside last month, a half-year after his son died crashing his Ferrari, a sign of corruption. Hu's anointed successor, Vice President Xi Jinping, dropped from sight for two weeks this month for reasons unexplained. Retired top leader Jiang Zemin reappeared at a theatrical performance this week, in what was seen as a public showing of his continued ? and for his rivals unwelcomed ? influence over appointments and policy making.

Meanwhile, the government is grappling with a rapidly slowing economy and a bitter territorial dispute with Japan that sparked violent street protests and is having an impact on trade ties. Labor unrest, a growing urban middle class, and anger over corruption and illegal land seizures are fueling demands for reform.

Given all the tumult, it's little wonder that planning for the congress might have been disrupted, said Liu Shanying, a political scientist at the government's Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

"In view of some uncertainties both at home and abroad, such as the dispute (with Japan), it's quite understandable if we see a bit of a delay because agreements need to be reached over some major issues," Liu said.

While the party does not publicly announce Politburo meetings in advance, foreign diplomats and party members working in state media and at a Beijing university say they have been informed verbally of its convening. They said it would be held either Friday or over the weekend.

Behind the scenes, the Politburo will do much more than approve the congress dates. It is expected to approve the slate of leaders and senior military commanders who for the next decade will guide China, the world's second-largest economy and an increasingly assertive diplomatic and military power.

The Politburo decisions set in train a series of events. The 204-member Central Committee, a cross-section of the national party elite, usually convenes about a week before the congress to approve decisions already made by the Politburo. Privately, the committee will approve the incoming leaders and a policy blueprint for the next five years. Publicly, they are expected to announce the party's decision on Bo.

Rank-and-file delegates to the party congress, which is a mostly ceremonial event, have not been told when the congress will be held. Beijing delegate Yu Dan, a noted Confucian scholar, has yet to receive any notice about when to be ready, she said through an assistant.

But signs that the congress is nearing have abounded in recent days. State media are running special newspaper sections and television news segments welcoming the congress. Speaking at the United Nations on Thursday, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the congress would be held "soon."

"We are confident that this important meeting will lead China's reform, opening-up and modernization drive to a new stage," Yang said.

Let's Press Play: Website Video Tips & Tricks | Internet Marketing Blog

We had an interesting seminar this morning about the use of videos for your website. It was presented by one of our staff members, Hal, who has a remarkable amount of history in taking, editing, and producing video content for websites and businesses ranging from industrial B2B clients all the way to comic book convention organizations. While she did all the work during the presentation, I was able to attend as a guest and picked her brain to figure out some great tips and tricks on how videos can help your website grow. And if you think it?s all just about traffic, you?re wrong! Here are some of the highlights:

Know Why You?re Making a Video.

Making a cool video for your website sounds fun. You can have moving images on your home page, you can be quirky or serious, you can show off your work environment, whatever you want to do! But ? Why? Why are you making a video? That is the first question you need to answer before you go out and story board, buy equipment, or take valuable time out of your day. Ask yourself what you hope to have this video accomplish. Is it to drive traffic, build brand awareness, or even act as a resource for people in the field? Before you jump head first into this big task, answering this question will make things a lot easier on you.

Know Who Your Audience Is.

You may think that knowing why you?re making a video would go hand-in-hand with knowing who your audience is, but that?s not always the case. For instance, just because you want to make a video tour of your office doesn?t mean that there is an audience that wants to see it! Ask yourself who your customers are (and even who your customers for this particular video would be), and think of what kind of video would be right for them. Are they busy? Do they need a short video to engage with? Are you offering an hour long presentation video for people who missed a conference? Are they ready to dedicate time to the video? Knowing what the audience expects from you will help you understand how to make the best video for them, which goes a long way.

Get Familiar With YouTube!

During our seminar today we talked about a lot of different video hosting sites online. Regardless of whether you host the video on your own site, or on social sites like Vimeo or Facebook, the most bang for your buck is ypically found by companies who when they hose their videos on YouTube. There are a bushel of reasons as to why people reach this decision ? something we could and probably should dedicate an entirely separate blog post to! ? but the main items essentially come down to convenience, cost savings, and measuring return on investment. YouTube offers easy access to upload and edit your videos from a computer or mobile device, is often a default video player application for many devices, is accessible by most everyone, and provides quick and easy ways to conveniently embed the video onto your own website. It?s free to use, and even if a video is embedded on your site, doesn?t cost you bandwith or server space. And the Analytics section they offer is unparalleled in educating you on how people are watching your video, where they?re watching it, and more. Really, it is some amazing stuff aimed at helping you have better videos. But don?t fool yourself! It?s not the only option out there.

Don?t Forget Your Brand!

While it may be easy to get wrapped up in the details of what?s going on behind the camera, make sure you don?t forget what?s happening on the screen, either! For most, branding will be a big purpose of your online videos. But what good will the video do if it doesn?t even mention your brand? Whether it?s someone saying a company name during the video, inserting a logo watermark, website, or phone number throughout the video or at beginning and end slides, you don?t want to forget that your video is supposed to work for you. This is a good rule of thumb, but of course you may have a video where you want the brand to play it a bit more coy. Think of all the viral marketing that Coca-Cola or other big brand names have done where they almost entirely remove themselves from the video, leaving only the customer. This can be a great marketing tactic too, where appropriate.

Be Creative (Dare I Say, ?E?Creative?)

But what are you supposed to do for a video? We?ve touched on a couple of video topic ideas, but the list is always expanding. Popular videos include product showcases for businesses, facility tours, video news releases or quarterly updates, how-to videos, maintenance, funny social videos, and much, much more. The idea is pretty simple though ? Create a video that someone will want to watch. Think about your own video experiences or needs, and think about what you?d hope to find in an online video from someone?s site. Clearly, if you don?t find it useful or entertaining, no one else will either!

Take Time to Do it Right.

Another big takeaway from today?s seminar was the importance of understanding that if you want to do a video right, it will take dedicated time. Our presenter shared for every minute of video, there is at least an hour of editing work, which doesn?t actually include the filming, producing, and other pre-work needed. This isn?t a deterrent, but a reality! If we want quality videos on our websites, we need to make the time to make the video.

If you ever want other tips or tricks, be sure to follow Ecreativeworks? YouTube channel for current video examples.

I cite: Liza Featherstone in Dissent Magazine - "Empowerment ...

Won?t Back Down is liberal Hollywood?s second blast of gas on what was once a bugbear of the Right: the badness of public schools and teachers? unions, and the magic bullet of hope offered by privatization. The first was Davis Guggenheim?s documentary Waiting for Superman. Barnz?s movie, featuring great actresses Viola Davis and Gyllenhall, is far more watchable than Guggenheim?s, but the fantasy world it inhabits is exactly the same. Its release, just on the heels of the Chicago teachers? strike, feels eerily timely, as its anti-union talking points are just the same as those of Rahm Emanuel and the monied interests of Chicago.

The film?s presentation of the social context is heartbreakingly accurate?poor kids like Jamie?s daughter, Malia, don?t get the education they deserve. But otherwise, the movie presents a Mad Tea Party view of urban education, and of social change itself. In Won?t Back Down, and in the bipartisan neoliberal fairytale that passes for education reform, teachers and parents are good, but the institutions that represent them?unions, the state?are bad. ?Empowerment? is desirable, even ecstatic??Be the change you want to see!? Jamie crows to a throng of cheering parents?but democracy is the enemy. Getting rid of representative government and calling in a private entity to handle things, in our current Opposite Day political moment, represents a glorious triumph of people power. The ?parent trigger? invites parents to use their vote to give up their vote?that is, to be enormously powerful for one short moment of direct democracy, which they will use to dispose, in the long run, with the ?public? part of public school, and thus with any actual power over their children?s education.

Jamie leads the fictional takeover because her daughter, who is dyslexic, can?t read. Yet not a word is said in the movie about the need for more services and teachers for special needs kids. The school is depicted as depressing and shabby?what about the need for more resources? What about all the extra support poor children need? We see kids acting out and falling asleep in class?where are the social workers to help those kids?

Never mind those wonky details. The problem, we?re repeatedly led to believe, is the teachers? union. But if unions were to blame for failing schools, wouldn?t unionized public schools in Princeton or Scarsdale also suck?

Hollywood hasn?t been known to let logic get in the way of a good story, and neither do education reformers. Facts are similarly irrelevant. In the movie, Malia?s teacher?a repellent timeserver who locks the little girl in a closet as punishment?can?t be fired because of the union. There are more than a few problems with this scenario. Outside of Tinseltown and the corporate reform imaginary, union members do get fired. In fact, according to data from National Center for Education Statistics, there is no correlation between teacher dismissal rates and union membership. In Massachusetts, where almost all public school teachers belong to a union, the firing rate for experienced teachers is nearly twice that in North Carolina, where just 2.3 percent of the teaching force is unionized.

Shopping for a Pet-Friendly Oahu Condo | Hawaii Reporter

BY?Suyin Phillips, RA?-??Are you a home buyer who has a furry family member, or would like the freedom to adopt one down the road? According to the Hawaiian Humane Society, more than 60% of Oahu households include pets. To many, pets are members of the family and finding a new home to accommodate them is just as important as basic criteria of location, affordability, and size.

Check on Pet Policies Before Submitting an Offer

When considering a condominium unit for purchase, have your Realtor check on the association?s policy regarding pets, or request a copy of the association?s House Rules from the building?s managing agent or resident manager.?While Buyers are given an opportunity to review this information during the escrow process, why go through the trouble of submitting an offer on a property that won?t allow your pet?

Also, pet policies can be more complex than just ?yes, pets allowed? or ?no, pets not allowed.??Some associations:

  • Only allow certain types of pets (for example, birds only)
  • Maintain a weight limit (such as dogs up to 50 lbs.)
  • Have a number limit (up to two dogs)
  • Require the animal to be registered with the management upon moving in

Finding the Right Pet-Friendly Place is Well Worth the Effort

Finding a good home for both the furry and non-furry members of your family may require a little more planning and time.?Once you find the right place, keeping the family together will be well worth the effort?just think of all the purrs and woofs of gratitude!

The Face of Indefinite Detention ? E-Flyer Site

BEFORE he died on Sept. 8, Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif had spent close to 4,000 days and nights in the American prison at Guant?namo Bay, Cuba. He was found unconscious, alone in his cell, thousands of miles from home and family in Yemen.

editor, Andrew Rosenthal, follow @andyrNYT.

Eleven years ago, he found himself in Afghanistan at the wrong place and the wrong time. It was an unusual set of events that took him there. Years earlier Mr. Latif had been badly injured in a car accident in Yemen. His skull was fractured; his hearing never quite recovered. He traveled to Jordan, seeking medical treatment at a hospital in Amman; then, following the promise of free medical care from a man he met there, journeyed to Pakistan, and eventually to Afghanistan.

Like so many men still imprisoned at Guant?namo, Mr. Latif was fleeing American bombing ? not fighting ? when he was apprehended by the Pakistani police near the Afghan border and turned over to the United States military. It was at a time when the United States was paying substantial bounties for prisoners. Mr. Latif, a stranger in a strange land, fit the bill. He was never charged with a crime.

The United States government claims the legal authority to hold men like Mr. Latif until the ?war on terror? ends, which is to say, forever. Setting aside this troubling legal proposition, his death and the despair he endured in the years preceding it remind us of the toll Guant?namo takes on human beings.

Adnan Latif is the human face of indefinite detention.

In the landmark 2008 case Boumediene v. Bush, the Supreme Court ruled that Guant?namo detainees were entitled to ?meaningful judicial review? of the legality of their detentions, via the writ of habeas corpus ? a constitutional check obligating the government to demonstrate a sufficient factual and legal basis for imprisoning someone. The Boumediene decision, in principle, ought to have given hope to Mr. Latif and men like him.

And it was under such principle that two years later, a United States District Court judge hearing Mr. Latif?s habeas corpus petition ordered him released, ruling that the accusations against him were ?unconvincing? and that his detention was ?not lawful.? By that time, Mr. Latif had been cleared for release from Guant?namo on three separate occasions, including in 2009 by the Obama administration?s multiagency Guant?namo Review Task Force.

Nevertheless, the Department of Justice appealed the district court?s decision to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ? which has ruled in the government?s favor in nearly every habeas corpus appeal it has heard. The appellate court reversed the trial judge?s release order, effectively ruling that evidence against detainees must be presumed accurate and authentic if the government claims it is.

A strong dissenting opinion criticized the appellate court majority for not just ?moving the goal posts,? but also calling ?the game in the government?s favor.?

But Mr. Latif didn?t see it as a game. He was dying inside. Like other men, he had been on a hunger strike to protest his detention. After losing the appeal of his case, he told his lawyer, ?I am a prisoner of death.?

Three months ago, the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeals of Mr. Latif and six other detainees, who pleaded for the court to restore its promise of meaningful review of their cases.

But what is unsaid in all of the court rulings is that Mr. Latif was imprisoned not by evidence of wrongdoing, but by accident of birth. In Guant?namo?s contorted system of justice, the decision to detain him indefinitely turned on his citizenship, not on his conduct.

With Mr. Latif?s death, there are now 56 Yemenis who have been cleared for release by the Guant?namo Review Task Force since 2009 but who remain in prison. President Obama, citing general security concerns, has imposed a moratorium on any and all transfers to Yemen, regardless of age, innocence or infirmity.

It is fair, and regrettable, to assume that some of these detainees will die there as well.

Mr. Latif, after all, was the ninth man to die at Guant?namo. More men have died in the prison camp than have been convicted by a civilian court (one) or by the military commissions system in Guant?namo (six). In 2006, Salah al-Salami, a Yemeni, and Yasser al-Zahrani and Mani al-Utaybi, both Saudis, were the first men to die at Guant?namo. Their deaths were called suicides, even though soldiers stationed at the base at the time have raised serious questions about the plausibility of the Defense Department?s account. (Full disclosure: the Center for Constitutional Rights represents the families of two of the men who died.)

According to the government, three more detainees committed suicide and two others died of natural causes. There has been no independent investigation into any of the deaths, however; there has been no accountability for a range of constitutional and human rights violations at Guant?namo.

The government has not yet identified the cause of Mr. Latif?s death, but it is Guant?namo that killed him. Whether because of despair, suicide or natural causes, death has become an inevitable consequence of our politically driven failure to close the prison ? a natural byproduct of the torment and uncertainty indefinite detention inflicts on human beings.

The case of Adnan Latif should compel us to confront honestly the human toll of the Guant?namo prison ? now approaching its 12th year in operation. We can start this reckoning by releasing the 86 other men at Guant?namo who the United States government has concluded no longer deserve to be jailed there.

Baher Azmy is the legal director of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Kean/Singer Student Loan Literacy Legislation Clears Committee ...

Legislation sponsored by Senators Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Union) and Robert W. Singer (R- Ocean) designed to help high school students better understand the financial obligations they are incurring when taking out student loans to finance their post-secondary education has been approved by the Senate Higher Education Committee.

The bill, S- 2150, requires the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) to develop a document containing student loan repayment information on state, federal and private student loans, and mandates that document be disseminated by school districts and nonpublic high schools to students.

Kean said that student loan debt presents challenges to new graduates that they may or may not have foreseen when choosing what institution to attend or degree to pursue.

?Americans citizens are now in greater debt for student loans than they are their cars or credit cards,? said Kean. ?It is straining our economy and severely crippling the financial stability of graduates just starting out in life during an economic downturn. Just as important for young people as having access to education financing is having access to information that spells out explicitly what the loans mean for their personal finances after graduation. Young people and their parents need to make smart choices about their education based in part on how the debt they will incur helps their job prospects and earning potential after graduation.?

Singer said that for most high school graduates, student loans are the first major financial transaction they will make in their lives.

?Student loans are being taken out by young people who likely have never incurred a major financial obligation in their lives and have limited financial literacy,? said Singer, who sits on the board of Georgian Court University in Lakewood. ?They need to have a grasp of what loan repayment will mean for them prior to deciding where they go to school, what they will study, and how much money they will borrow. We cannot just expect that a teenager is going to grasp what it means to finance an education costing tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars without illustrating it for them.?

Ease Into 5K Is a Powerful Running Coach in Your Pocket

Most of the fitness apps out there for iOS have three basic functions: They track your performance, integrate with your playlists to give you some music to listen to, and offer the ability to share what you've done on Facebook or Twitter. Ease Into 5K adds another layer to that formula: a ready-made training plan that builds from a relatively easy workout up to the target distance of 5 kilometers, or roughly 3 miles.

Muslim rage over Prophet film fed by hunt for America's free speech 'red lines'

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - In U.S.-funded ads running on Pakistani TV, subtitled clips show President Barack Obama extolling America's traditions of religious freedom. For many watching, though, the message misses the mark in efforts to calm the Islamic outrage over a film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

America's free speech laws and values of openness are not in question, but rather there is confusion and anger over how they are applied.

A powerful theme binding the protests from Indonesia to Africa is the perception that the U.S. codes of free speech are somehow weighted against Islam ? permitting the Internet video that insults the faith but placing clear limits on hot button issues such as hate speech, workplace discrimination and even what is acceptable on prime-time network TV.

Beyond the rage, bloodshed and death threats ? churning now for two weeks ? is a quandary for American policymakers that will linger long after the latest mayhem fades: How to explain the U.S. embrace of free expression to an Islamic world that increasingly sees only double standards?

Although there are many nuances ? including strict U.S. laws when hate speech crossed the line into threats or intimidation ? they are mostly lost in the current outrage that included a peaceful march in Nigeria on Monday and Iran threatening to boycott the 2013 Academy Awards after the country's first Oscar-winning film this year.

With each protest, many clerics and Islamic hard-liners hammer home the narrow view that America is more concerned with political correctness or safeguarding children from sexual content than the religious sensibilities of Muslims.

In Gaza, preacher Sheik Hisham Akram said tolerance is the goal, but the "red line" is crossed with "anyone who insults our religion." Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ? now in New York for the U.N.'s annual General Assembly ? denounced last week the "deception" of U.S. laws protecting rights while allowing the clip from the film "Innocence of Muslims," which portrays Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester.

"In some extent, it's not an issue of condemning America's freedom of speech. It's become an issue, in the eyes of many Muslims, over where the lines are and why they are not protecting the feelings of Muslims," said John Voll, associate director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University in Washington.

It also turns the $70,000 U.S. ad initiative in Pakistan ? one of the hotbeds of the protests ? into a major challenge to gain any ground. Besides Obama, the spots include Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton repeating that U.S. authorities had no connection to the video.

It's part of wider U.S. strategies to use social media and other forums to reach out to moderates in the Islamic world ? including what the State Department has described as a "virtual embassy" for Iranian web surfers. But the fallout from the film has so far drowned out appeals for calmer dialogue in places such as Pakistan, where at least 23 people have died in unrest linked to the film.

"The fact that (the Obama administration) is trying to step up to the plate and trying to engage where the debate is really happening should be commended," said Daniel Markey, a senior fellow in South Asian affairs at the Council on Foreign Relations. "But what credibility do they have to deliver this message? That's a different story. ... It's unlikely to make the sale on the Pakistani street."

At the U.N., a separate effort is being spearheaded by Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He said the film will be at the top of the agenda of a meeting of the 57-member group on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

Among the proposals is a call to impose an international law against promoting religious hatred. Such appeals could get widespread support, but are nearly certain to collide with Western free speech codes and be rendered difficult to enforce in the borderless world of the web.

Already, many moderate Muslim scholars and leaders have urged the U.N. or other international bodies to step in to help define possible global standards on religious expression.

Paul Bhatti, an adviser to the Pakistani prime minister, told a multifaith crowd of Muslims, Christians and others outside the country's parliament Sunday that international laws should be imposed to limit the most hateful fringes of Western free speech.

But just a day earlier, a Pakistan government minister offered a $100,000 bounty for the death of the filmmaker.

The two responses ? one appealing for a higher law and the other taking justice into his own hands ? frame another divide pried wider by the latest chaos: How much leeway can Muslim countries allow for expressions of anger against their faith?

While many Muslims believe American protections for open expression were abused by the film, there are also moderate voices in the Islamic world questioning whether the defence of their religion is warped by death threats and violence that has left dozens dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

"This is the flip side to the criticism against American free speech," Voll said. "This is another major learning opportunity inside Muslim societies to look at themselves and interactions with the world. We have been here before."

But the latest upheavals appear to resonate even deeper because of the widening reach of the web and social media, which also have played a central role in the Arab Spring uprisings that have opened new political space for hard-line Islamists.

"Sadly, the voices of reason and logic in this part of the world are few," said Ebtehal al-Khateeb, a Kuwait University professor and human rights activist. "Even those who strongly oppose the violence prefer not to speak."

Kuwait is a particularly instructive proving ground in the struggle to clarify an Islamic version of free speech.

After Islamist-led opposition groups gained control of parliament in February, they tried to push through measures that included the death penalty for blasphemy against Islam. Kuwait's Western-leaning rulers signalled they would reject the move and later suspended the parliament over election law technicalities.

"The truth is that as amateurish movie production is, it still falls in the category of freedom of speech," al-Khateeb said. "If you say that to people here, they will read your response as: 'You accept this. You are a blasphemer.' They still don't understand that they don't have to accept it. They can oppose it, but in a civil manner that is more constructive."

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (September 22, 2012) - GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing history was made on Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Triumph Big Kahuna Miami presented by Dunlop Tire and LeoVince and, for once, it didn't have anything to do with Josh Hayes.

National Guard Jordan Suzuki's Roger Hayden enjoyed what was likely the greatest day of his racing career to date; the Kentuckian claimed his first-career AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike pole position in the morning and then backed it up with his first-career premier class victory in the afternoon.

Hayden's triumphant Saturday closed out two historic streaks of Hayes' while delaying the inevitable. Hayden's pole snapped the champ's run of 11-consecutive pole positions (which tied Mat Mladin's '05-'06 record), and #54's blowout victory ended Hayes' all-time mark of 10-straight AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike wins.

Hayden took the early lead from Yoshimura Suzuki's Blake Young and was followed past by the #1 Monster Energy Graves Yamaha of Hayes. However, the race took a shocking turn moments later when Hayes clipped a curb and crashed from second while working lap 3 of 23.

The Mississippian frantically sprinted to his downed machine, picked it up, and re-entered the fray, but could only work his way back up to 12th position in the end. The uncharacteristic mistake pushed the clinching of a third-consecutive National Guard SuperBike title back at least one more day.

Meanwhile, Hayden, who was momentarily dropped back to second by Young, reclaimed first and then broke free from the multi-rider fight that was developing behind him.

Taking full advantage of the opportunity before him, Hayden stormed off into the distance and took the victory with several seconds to spare. He used an intermediate Dunlop tire to win the race, a bit of a risk as he?d never run that particular tire before. Hayden and his team also changed the setup on the bike after the morning practice session.

An elated Hayden took the checkered flag in his hand for a victory lap to celebrate that long-awaited career achievement.

An emotional Hayden said, "It feels really good -- it's been a long time since I've won. So many things are going through my head right now, I just want to go back to the truck and sit there by myself and let it all sink in. It's been a lot of work getting back -- a lot of injuries. Lot of people stuck with me -- my family mainly. My sisters, my brothers were always trying to help me, my parents were always right there. You have a lot of friends when you're winning but when you're laid up in the hospital bed with a broken back, broken pelvis, there's not a lot of people calling you. My family stayed with me through thick and thin when almost everyone else gave up on me. I guess I want to dedicate this win to my family for everything that they've done for me no matter what.

"I've got to thank my team, Michael Jordan Motorsports, and the National Guard, because last year nobody really wanted to give me a chance -- they thought I was used goods. I think today made it look like they made the right choice. And for myself, I put a lot of work into it and to finally win?

"I put my head down right away and was ready for the fight. These guys came by me and we had some good passes, and then I just tried to put my head down and get a gap and maintain it. I thought my lap board was missing laps because I was thinking, 'I know we did more than just one lap.' It seemed like it took forever but I got the win and I'm happy."

Young fell off the chase for the win and back into a remarkable battle for second with Team Hero EBR's Danny Eslick. The two traded the position back and forth countless times in a scrap that displayed the full extent of the two chargers? repertoire of overtaking maneuvers.

In the end, Eslick's aggressive tactics won out over Young's, as the Oklahoman edged ahead at the checkered flag by 0.089 seconds.

"There was one lap where we probably went back and forth five, six, or seven times," Eslick said of the dogfight. "It was a good race. It was clean, and it was just good, hard racing. Me and Blake have raced each other for a lot of years and raced each other hard. There's no love lost while we were out there; we were definitely going for it out there. It was pretty awesome."

Third-placed Young said, "I kind of had two races going on. I was racing at the front, and then Roger decided he wanted it more than me and kind of took off. I thought that was going to be the end of my day. And then I saw my pitboard about halfway through said '+1 69' and I thought, 'oh boy, here we go.' Obviously, it was a pretty good race."

Their brawl allowed Team Amsoil/Hero EBR's Geoff May to claw back into podium contention as well; the Georgian finished in fourth just 0.252 seconds behind Young.

Jordan Suzuki's Ben Bostrom finished a lonely fifth with M4 Suzuki's Chris Ulrich claiming an impressive sixth.

A healthy tussle decided seventh position; Kneedraggers.com/Motul/Fly Racing's David Anthony ultimately took the position just ahead of Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing BMW's Larry Pegram, Riders Discount K&L Supply's Taylor Knapp, EvanSteelPerformance BMW's Aaron Yates, and KTM/HMC Racing's Chris Fillmore.

The powerful Monster Energy Graves Yamaha squad's Saturday pain was only intensified when Josh Herrin suffered a problem while circulating in sixth. He continued on track but faded all the way to 19th by the race's completion.

Despite his Saturday disappointment, Hayes is still in commanding position to clinch the title. Only a non-score combined with either a victory or runner-up finish on Young's part could prevent Hayes from claiming his third-straight AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike championship on Sunday.

AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike

Y.E.S. Graves Yamaha pilot Cameron Beaubier won the Saturday AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike race in decisive fashion over Martin Cardenas and Bobby Fong.

Beaubier has now won six out of the last eight races in the GoPro Daytona SportBike class after an early-season injury effectively ended his shot at the title as Cardenas (GEICO Suzuki) has taken charge of the championship.

Beaubier took pole for the race, but Cardenas earned the holeshot on the start. By lap four, the Californian had moved to the front and earned a gap he held for the rest of the race.

?I was pushing pretty hard at the beginning,? said Beaubier. ?I had a soft tire that had started spinning up by the end. I tried to stay consistent and brought it home. The team gave me an awesome bike.?

?I led for two laps,? said Cardenas. ?Cameron passed me and was a little stronger at the beginning of the race. I could see the board, and Bobby was behind me. At the end, I put my head adown and increased my rhythm. It was good to finish second.

Beaubier took the win by 1.633 seconds over Cardenas, who was threatened by Fong and Dane Westby (M4 Suzuki). Westby closed on his rivals and looked to be making a strong push, but he couldn?t get by so he took fourth.

Jake Gagne had an odd race. The RoadRace Factory/Red Bull pilot ran up front early, dropped back with an apparent machine issue, then returned to the action down in the pack. He made it back to fifth place and cut the race?s quick lap (1:26.066).

Jake Zemke was sixth on the DucShop Ducati, ahead of Tommy Aquino (Kneedraggers.com) and Jason DiSalvo (Latus Motors Racing Triumph).

Austin DeHaven, coming off an injury, was ninth for Kneedraggers.com.

AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport

Orient Express Celtic Racing's James Rispoli outlasted Kneedraggers.com Stefano Mesa to win Saturday's intense AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstpore.com SuperSport shootout.

Rispoli and Mesa distanced themselves from an earlier seven-rider scrap for the lead and settled into a one-on-one duel over the race's second half. Mesa made a couple of slick maneuvers to steal the lead briefly, but Rispoli had an answer for every assault. Mesa's bid was made all the more difficult when his helmet's visor came off with seven laps remaining.

In the end, Rispoli won out to the stripe by 0.564 after eking out a bit of space on the race's final lap.

"It was really slick and me and Stefano did a good job of sliding around and making it look fun," Rispoli said. "In the middle of the race, he came rippin' by and I was like, 'OK, it's time to go.' I got back in tow, reeled him in a little bit, and found some parts where I was a little bit faster. I made my move a couple laps later. It was really fun racing today."

RoadRace Factory/Red Bull's Tomas Puerta narrowly edged Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki's Jake Lewis for the final podium position by 0.043 seconds, but Lewis was still the big winner on the day.

East Region title leader Dustin Dominguez dropped out of the battle for third, and Lewis made up serious ground in the points chase, moving from 20 points out to just two points back (208-206).

National Guard/Fairhills Group/Celtic Racing's Cory Alexander rounded out the top five.

AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series

Tyler O?Hara (Bartel?s Harley-Davidson) won provisional pole for Sunday?s AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series race. O?Hara set a time of 1:38.629 in tough conditions at the 2.2-mile circuit on Saturday afternoon as he topped local rider Mike Barnes for the spot.

?We made the decision to get out there early and get a couple of good laps,? said O?Hara, who added the weather worsened for most of the session.

Barnes (KLR Group/Spykes H-D) was second, alongside Travis Wyman (Harv?s H-D) and Michael Corbino (Rossiter`s Harley-Davidson).

Title contender Kyle Wyman (KLR Group) crashed during the session.
