Advocates list gay-welcoming wedding vendors

With Minnesota?s ?first same-sex weddings set for Thursday, supporters and opponents of the new marriage law are busy on very different tracks. Advocates want things to go smoothly on the first day. Businesses that don?t want to serve gay and lesbian weddings continue to look at whether, legally, they can say no.

For vendors eager to serve this new slice of the wedding market, there?s a?website? of welcoming Minnesota wedding vendors.

www.weddingequalitymn.com is a free site where vendors can list their services for gay couples.

?We knew many Minnesota businesses and organizations would want to provide wedding-related services for same-sex couples in Minnesota once weddings started on August 1. So we created an easy way for these groups to let LGBT Minnesotans know that their wedding business is welcome across our state,? said Eric Jensen, communications director for Project 515, which along with OutFront Minnesota helped change Minnesota?s law and build the vendor list.

Jensen said more than 200 businesses, organizations and individuals have posted listings so far.

That?s a more positive spin than this piece in the Colu.mn, a LGBT website, that reminds shoppers which businesses contributed to Minnesota for Marriage, the group that tried to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. That measure was defeated by voters last year.

?Same-sex couples might want to avoid holding a reception at Lord Fletcher?s Old Lake Lodge Restaurant in (Spring Park). The owner gave $1,000 to Minnesota for Marriage.? ??Planning a gay wedding in Minnesota? Buy Equality and avoid businesses that might discriminate

Minnesota for Marriage spokesperson Autumn Leva said Friday she wasn?t aware of either effort, but said Minnesota for Marriage has been receiving a lot of inquiries from people in the wedding industry who oppose the new law but can?t legally refuse to serve a gay couple. (Minnesota?s 1993 Human Rights Law guarantees equal protection in public accommodations)

?Businesses are very concerned,? said Leva.? ?They know that there is no protection for them in their ability to live out their beliefs in the way they run their business.?

Leva says a farm owner was approached by a couple who wanted to rent it for their wedding, but Leva can?t provide any specific names of businesses. Minnesota for Marriage is referring them to attorneys at the Alliance Defending Freedom which has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Washington State florist who refused to sell flowers to a gay customer for his wedding and was sued by that state?s attorney general.

Leva predicts similar litigation will happen? in Minnesota. ?It certainly has proven to be true in every other state that passed same-sex marriage,? said Leva.? ?I?m 100 percent certain that will be the case here in Minnesota as well.?

Leva said Minnesota for Marriage is organizing a forum in October to help people understand the law.

Synta Pharma shares soar after co says to expand breast cancer study

(Reuters) - Synta Pharmaceuticals Corp shares soared as much as 47 percent in heavy trading after the company said preliminary results from a mid-stage study of its drug ganetespib in breast cancer patients supported an expansion of the study.

According to the design of the trial, it would advance to the second stage of enrollment if at least one patient achieved objective tumor response, a measure of reduction in tumor size.

The study, codenamed ENCHANT-1, showed that four patients achieved an objective tumor response.

"We believe these data are important in driving both the potential in multiple tumor types as well as partnering potential," Roth Capital analyst Joseph Pantginis wrote in a client note.

The company said it would continue to enroll up to 33 patients in each of the two patient groups being tested in the study.

The trial will now evaluate a combination of ganetespib and a widely used cancer drug called paclitaxel.

Ganetespib blocks a protein which assists other proteins involved in tumor development and progression in many solid cancers and blood cancers.

The company is also testing the drug in combination with another cancer drug in a late-stage trial for lung cancer. The drug is also being tested in patients with colorectal and blood cancers.

Synta shares were up 35 percent at $6.86 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq. The stock touched a high of $7.45 earlier.

More than 14 million shares changed hands by 1310 ET, eight times the stock's 10-day average trading volume.

"I am really, really proud?to have been able to shake the?hands of some of these amazing?people," Ms Rein said.

Your mums and dads, your brothers and sisters, your wives and husbands and partners, and your kids are all enormously proud of you. It's time we brought you home.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

Some of the soldiers said they were excited by Mr Rudd's visit.

"I'm very honoured that he's actually taken the time out of his very busy schedule to come and do that for us, it's fantastic, 100 per cent support from Australia and he represents our country, everything we do, so [it] makes you a very proud Aussie," one said.

By the end of the year, 1,000 of the remaining 1,300 Australian troops will have returned home.

The other 300 will stay as advisers and trainers based in Kabul and Kandahar.

Pakistan Says Soldier Killed by India Border Firing

by Naharnet Newsdesk 27 July 2013, 09:13 W460

Indian troops shot and killed one Pakistani soldier and injured another in an "unprovoked" attack across the countries' disputed border in Kashmir, Pakistan's army said Saturday.

"A soldier embraced martyrdom while another was seriously injured due to unprovoked firing by Indian troops in Rawala Kot area at the Line of Control (LoC) on Saturday," the army said in a statement.

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority territory, is divided into Indian and Pakistani-administered sectors but is claimed in full by both sides.

It has been the cause of two of three wars between India and Pakistan since independence from Britain in 1947.

A ceasefire has been in force along the Line of Control since 2003 despite sporadic violations on both sides.

WSU offensive coordinator suspended; action stems from violations as Montana coach

OGDEN ? Weber State offensive coordinator Robin Pflugrad has been suspended by the NCAA for one game for violations committed while he was the head coach at Montana.

Pflugrad will not be allowed to coach between Aug. 26 and the end of Weber State?s season opener on Aug. 31 at Stewart Stadium against Stephen F. Austin.

The University of Montana and Pflugrad were penalized for ?failure to monitor the football program,? according to a statement from the NCAA in announcing the sanctions on Friday. The Division I Committee on Infractions found boosters for the Grizzlies ?provided extra benefits to football players, including meals, free legal representation and bail bond payments, a small loan, clothing, lodging, transportation and laundry services. Additionally, the football team exceeded coaching limits and two former student-athletes competed while ineligible.?

The NCAA?s investigation found that Pflugrad was aware that boosters posted bail for two football players but did not report it, while former Montana athletics director Jim O?Day and other senior department members were aware boosters were providing legal assistance.

In addition to the suspension, Pflugrad is restricted from off-campus evaluations this fall, from off-campus recruiting during the first three weeks of the fall and will be required to attend an NCAA rules seminar. Weber State associate head coach Steve Morton will serve as offensive coordinator during Pflugrad?s suspension.

Montana?s penalties include three years of probation, the loss of four scholarships from 2014-17, vacating of five wins from 2011 season in games ineligible athletes played, a $3,000 donation to a local charity, the loss of two student assistant coaching positions this season or next and an external review of Montana?s compliance program.

In 2011, Pflugrad?s second season, the Grizzlies were 11-3 (7-1 Big Sky Conference), tied for the league title and won twice in the FCS playoffs before losing in the semifinal to Sam Houston State.

Weber State football coach Jody Sears hired Pflugrad as offensive coordinator in February after what WSU athletics director Jerry Bovee described as a month-long hiring process.

?(Pflugrad) was very forthcoming to us and honest in his position on (the NCAA investigation),? Bovee said. ?That was the litmus test for us deciding whether he fit in our program.?

Pflugrad provided WSU with copies of his testimony to the NCAA.

?As we looked at it as a collective group with the administration, it felt like (Pflugrad) is a man of integrity, that he may have made some bad decisions, we all make mistakes, but we certainly didn?t see anything as we looked at his situation that gave us any indication that he purposely cheated,? Bovee said.

Pflugrad also said he gave WSU a letter from University of Montana President Royce C. Engstrom stating that there were no improprieties in his performance while at Montana. Pflugrad and O?Day were fired by Engstrom in March 2012.

?My focus was on maintaining the integrity of my football program and never an intent to gain any advantage for myself or any staff members,? Pflugrad said. ?I am ready to do my penalty and get on with football.?

In regard to the NCAA sanctions, Pflugrad said he ?had hoped they?d look at it maybe more humanistically and look at the circumstances and maybe be a little more lenient on the penalties, but that?s their job and I respect that,? he said. ?I?m ready to move on and do my time and learn and grow from it. I did learn a lot through this process.

Pflugrad said the sanctions were ?somewhat of a tough penalty. Failure is a tough word because we never intended to fail in monitoring anything, of course. We had many policies and procedures in place to monitor our players.?

There doesn?t seem to be any grey area in the report, he said, though he felt there were in the situation.

?What constituted a booster was part of the issue ? was it a family member trying to do something proactive in helping a player, is that ultimately a booster?? he said. ?Some of those decisions were difficult. After going through the NCAA investigation, it was proven to me that they were a potential booster and I did learn some things that way.?

The NCAA report says the night two Grizzlies football players were arrested in October 2011, the mother of a student-athlete posted their bail and they each later received an estimated $1,500 worth of legal assistance for free from the mother of an undergraduate student-employee. The Missoulian newspaper has identified the players as Gerald Kemp and Trumaine Johnson.

Pflugrad said the situation was very volatile.

?If you read through the NCAA (report), I did have concerns that there was the possibility of some civil rights violations that did exist,? he said. ?My concern was to control the emotions of my minority players and my minority coaching staff.

?There was never an intent to hide anything from (Montana?s) compliance (department),? Pflugrad said. ?It was just down on the totem pole because of all the other things that were going on with these mitigating circumstances. It was somewhat like a war zone at the time. The minute I knew none of our coaches had bailed players out, I moved on from that.?

Engstrom never offered a public explanation for the dismissals of O?Day and Pflugrad, but the University of Montana was in a tumultuous period where it was investigated not only by the NCAA but by the Department of Justice and the Department of Education for its responses to sexual assault allegations, some of which involved football players.

Pflugrad was fired just days after offering public support for Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson, who was eventually acquitted of a rape charge and has since returned to the team.

The firings came months after the October 2011 incident with Kemp and Trumaine Johnson.

?Really, the investigation had no bearing on my termination as a head football coach,? Pflugrad said, but ?the overall climate and publicity assisted in creating a certain atmosphere in which the administration overreacted and that resulted in the termination of the athletic director and myself as the head coach.?

Fox says Parkinson's won't be focus of NBC comedy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Michael J. Fox says Parkinson's disease will not be a major storyline of his upcoming NBC comedy.

On "The Michael J. Fox Show," the actor plays Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson's, who left the business to spend more time with his family. The series begins when he decides to return to work now that his kids are older.

At Saturday's Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox said he didn't think about how others with Parkinson's would react to the show because he doesn't "vet creative instinct."

"I just go with it," he said. "I feel that this is the reflection of my experience and certainly in the pilot it was more prevalent than it is in subsequent scripts. The way I look at life and the reality of Parkinson's, sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way and other people need to look at it that way. Beyond that we all got our own bag of hammers...I think people will look at that and say, 'Yeah, I need to laugh at my own stuff, too.'"

The premise of the show does have similarities to Fox's real-life story. The actor left "Spin City" in 2000 as he tried different treatments and medications to treat Parkinson's. He also used the opportunity to spend quality time with his four kids during their formative years.

"There's kind of a scrutiny of their stuff that won't exist if I'm being occupied by something else," joked Fox of the distraction of a full-time job.

Fox believes the viewers, however, will not be distracted by his character having Parkinson's on his new series.

"Parkinson's itself there's nothing horrifying to me. It's not horrible. I don't think it's gothic nastiness. There's nothing on the surface horrible about someone with shaking hands."

Since leaving "Spin City," Fox has had recurring roles on shows like "Rescue Me" and "The Good Wife." Those guest spots gave him the itch to do more.

"It really brought me to a place of, 'This is what I do,'" he said. "This is what I was built and programmed to do, and so I wanted to do it. It's what I've loved to do...I thought, 'Why can't I? There's no reason not to do it.'"

Because Fox plays a local NBC newscaster, the show will tap real people to do guest appearances that make the story more believable. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie are in the pilot. New Jersey governor Chris Christie will appear in an episode as himself.

"A fictional television network didn't give us 22 episodes," Will Gluck, executive producer, said jokingly on why they decided to make Fox's Mike Henry work for NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.
